--- The present study discusses about the solution to a problem raised at Minera la Zanja, which consisted in a high percentage of poor fragmentation produced by Primary Blasting Project in the San Pedro South Pit. The drilling a blasting activities were studied to achieve an optimal fragmentation. In the northern of San Pedro South Pit there is a high fracturing of the rock mass with a hard matrix (50-200 Mpa), high presence of water, has been the main area where has made adjustment to the project design, because in that area results of fragmentation were poor, generating the necessity of secondary blasting and the use of mechanical energy to reduce coarse material, increasing the areas destined for its disposal, also generate to obtain low recovery rates of Au in leach pad. To achieve the objectives of the fragmentation was revised blast theories and were implemented changes in the power fact, in the type and length of stemming, inter- hole and inter – row timing, and reduction of drilling pattern. The implementation of these changes has allowed obtain a monthly value of 8.17 inches, of P80 (passing 80 per cent) which means a reduction of 28% compared to the value of 11.4 inches, which is the average for the first semester of 2013. Achieving these fragmentation results generated a 3% increase in the recovery of Au.
