--- One of the biggest challenges today in periodontics and in oral and maxillofacial surgery is post-extraction alveolar ridge reconstruction and preservation using bone grafts substitutes for bone regeneration. Objective. Histological evaluation of post-extraction alveolar bone healing using allograft and xenograft in Cavia porcellus. Materials and Methods. 45 guinea pigs were used as experimental animals, divided in three groups: Group A (allograft), Group B (xenograft) and Group C (control). Extraction of tooth 41 was performed to all of them, with immediate graft filling according to the experimental group assigned and posterior alveolar closure. Alveolar bone healing variables as: blood clot, granulation tissue, provisional matrix and mineralized bone was evaluated by an histopmorphometric analysis using spot differential counting method in the evaluated alveolar areas (apical and medium third), at 5, 15 and 30 days. Results. After each experimental group evaluation, the greater values of all alveolar bone healing variables were observed in the apical alveolar third. When comparing allograft vs. xenograft in all time periods and alveolar areas there was significant difference (p˂0.05) in granulation tissue, provisional matrix and mineralized bone, finding higher values for the allograft group. Conclusion. Allograft not only showed a better and greater behavior as bone grafting in alveolar bone regeneration but also enhance alveolar bone healing in less time in comparison to xenograft. KEY WORDS: Alveolar bone healing, allograft, xenograft.
