-- The presented research assessed the index of oral hygiene in mentally challenged children (such as Down Syndrome, autism, mental retardation), before and after the parents received educational techniques in oral hygiene: in one group an informative and in another a demonstrative technique. The purpose of the analyses was to establish effectiveness of the educational techniques in a ‘control group’ of mentally challenged children in which an index of oral hygiene was utilized. The model at the Ann Sullivan Centre in Peru consisted of 90 mentally challenged children (41 autistics, 15 with Down syndrome and 34 mentally retarded) of a total of 360 students. The group of 90 parents was then divided proportionally into 3 groups of 30 parents each. The first group of 30 parents received the informative technique in oral hygiene, the second one received the demonstrative technique and the third group of parents did not receive any technique and was designated as the ‘control group’. Before the introduction of the educational techniques the index of oral hygiene in the group of 90 mentally challenged children was evaluated. Then we proceeded with the intended educational techniques in oral hygiene for each group of parents: the first educational technique applied was an informative one which included an audio-visual demonstration which lasted 40 minutes and consisted of three parts – the importance of teeth, brushing and the technique of brushing, fulfilling all the established requirements for that presentation. The second educational technique in oral hygiene used was a demonstrative one - which was performed on 6 groups of 5 parents each according to a schedule established by the Center. The technique lasted 40 minutes and it was done with the aid of didactic material such as scale models, mouth guard, posters, toothbrush, toothpaste, and spatula in a classroom at the Center. After the demonstration of the educational techniques performed to the groups of parents, we proceeded to evaluate the index of oral hygiene in their mentally challenged children. After the clinical observation we proceeded to tabulate the data and the statistical analysis. We concluded that the educational techniques were more effective with the demonstrative ones as compared to the informative techniques since the reduction in the index of oral hygiene was p<0,05 and the ‘control group’ did not show any significant variation.
