It was evaluated the protective ability of aqueous extract of the fruit of Myrciaria dubia H. B. K. Mc Vaugh “camu camu,“ in mouse bone marrow polychromatic erythrocytes to evaluated the antimutagenic effect against the mutagenic damage produced by sodium fluoride,. In this work, we used animals houses of the Rockefeller Swiss albino strain divided into two groups, 60 individuals from each sex. Those who drank ad libitum the aqueous extract of M dubia; TI = 50, TII = 25 and TIII = 5 mg / kg body weight respectively for 10 consecutive days; TIV drank 25 mg / kg body weight of ascorbic acid, the fifth group drank water ad libitum, the sixth group was intraperitoneally injected by 125 mg/kg of cyclophosphamide. The day tenth the mice were injected with a single dose of 20mg/kg of sodium fluoride. At day 11 mice were sacrificed to determine the frequency of MN and the rate of bone marrow cytotoxicity in bone marrow blood cells following the guidelines of Schmid (1975). The frequency of micronucleated erythrocytes was: TI = 3.1 ± 1.79* TII = 9.2 ± 1.93*, TIII = 26.8 ± 6.10 * TIV = 12.3 ± 3 62*; for females and TI = 3.9 ± 1.79* TII = 11 ± 2.58* and TIII = 32 ± 9.20* TIV = 10.3 ± 3.91* for males. The average values of the cytotoxicity index for male were: TI = 1.59 ± 0.42*; TII = 0.91 ± 0.23*; TIII = 0.81 ± 0.21* and the TIV = 1.37 ± 0.15*, for females the following values were obtained, TI = 1.59 ± 0.42*; TII = 0.91 ± 0.23*; TIII = 0.81 ± 0.21* and TIV = 1.37 ± 0.15*. These results were analyzed using parametric Tukey test with p <0.05 showing significant differences between them for the different treatments. It was determined that a higher concentration of the aqueous extract of the fruit of Myrciaria dubia produce the highest antimutagenic and cytoprotective effect on the erythrocytes of mice bone marrow. This did not happen with the group that was treated with cyclophosphamide, where polychromatic erythrocytes showed DNA damage as evidenced by the presence of MN. In conclusion, the aqueous extract of the fruit of Myrciaria dubia H. B. K. Mc Vaugh “camu camu“ counteracts the deleterious effects of sodium fluoride in erythrocytes of mouse bone marrow.
