--- The objetive of this study is investigate the prevalence of Spontaneous Bacterial Peritonitis (PBE) in cirrhotic patientes with ascites that are hospitalized in the Gastroenterologist Service of Hospital Nacional Guillermo Almenara Irigoyen. Between the months of July and December of 2003, 43 cirrhotic patients with ascites were hospitalized, 38 patientes were included in this study. A diagnostic paracentesis was performed in the first 48 hours of admision at hospital. The prevalence of PBE was found to be 26.3%. The bacterias found were Escherichia coli, Klebsiella oxytoca and Klebsiella neumoniae. We suggest the investigation of bacterias that cause PBE in the study of cirrhotic’s ascitic fluid .
