--- Agriculture is one of the most important economic activities in the world, both because of the income it represents for national economies, and the large number of jobs it creates. But like any human activity, it has exerted strong pressures on natural environments, particularly aquatic environments. This research aims to evaluate the degradation of aquatic environments in the lower Utcubamba River basin (Amazonas, Peru), an area of developing prosperous agricultural activity, using the principles of bioindication, which assesses species distribution of the benthic macroinvertebrate community to help determine environmental changes. Six sampling stations located in the main River and its tributaries were chosen, establishing control zones and study areas. These were evaluated during the wet season (February 2009) and the dry season (September 2009). First, the environmental conditions and water quality were characterized, and then the community structure and metrics of benthic macroinvertebrate community in the study area was analyzed. Clear changes in environmental characteristics (hydrology and environmental integrity) and water quality between the two periods were found, although differences in these environmental characteristics were not recorded between sampling stations. However, community analysis confirmed the existence of differences in species distribution between the time periods and between sampling stations using non-parametric statistical techniques. The Wilcoxon-Mann-Whitney test found temporal differences (p <0.05) in richness and abundance variables, while the ANOSIM analysis found differences in the community structure between the time periods (p <0.05) and between sampling stations (p <0.05). The cluster analysis and ordination nMDS identified two distinct groups at a level of 45% similarity, the first group considered the least degraded formed by the stations E-01, E-02 and E-06 and the second considered the most degraded formed E-03, E-04 and E-05, these results were supported by the findings of the metrics of compositio.
