The old population has grown in the last years and it's estimated a greater growth at world-wide level is going to take place; by 2020 in Peru this population will be 11% of the total population. It is born then with this process of population aging new concepts and definitions, as well as the necessity to revalue elderly people and to offer them an appropriate integral attention; despite of this fact, not in all realities are carried out these processes. The elderly people, those who have reached more than 65 years of life, that remain hospitalized not always receive an appropriate integral attention neither oriented to their necessities nor to the own physiological factors of this age. Under this frame a cross-sectional descriptive study is propose whose main target is to identify the prevalence of geriatric syndromes in elderly people hospitalized in the medicine blocks of the Hospital Nacional Arzobispo Loayza during November - December of the 2008. 209 elderly patients was interviewed, they was obtained by a nonprobabilistic, randomized, stratified by conglomerates sampling. For the measurement of the syndromes a booklet was used that included the Index of Barthel for Physical Handicap, the questionnaire of Yesavage for Depression, Mini-Mental of Lobo for Dementia, the Postal Questionnaire of the Woodside Health Center for Elderly of Risk and the Criteria of Fried for Fragility. The found results showed a high prevalence of the studied geriatric syndromes; dementia 36,9%, Physical Handicap 66,7%, 14,4% depression and fragility 31,8%. In addition, it was found a relationship between the variable sex with depression (X 2 = 3.2097, DF. 2, Prob.: 0.2009) and with fragility (X 2 = 2.8767, DF. 2, Prob.: 0.2373). As well as between the variable age with the variables Depression (X 2 = 1.7619, DF. 4, Prob.: 0.7795) and Fragility (X 2 = 0.1433, DF. 4, Prob.: 0.9976). Additionally, It was determined that only the 9.10% of the interviewed patients knew the preventive and promotional programs offered by the hospital. Finally, Is evident the necessity to deepen our knowledge with new studies that make emphasis of individual way in each one of the points that this work mentions and, in that way, to reach our final aim which is to reach elderly people who are healthful, independent and who are actors of agreed activities to their real potential.
