The main objective of this study was to evaluate the mechanical properties of cross-laminated timber (CLT) made from a broadleaf or hardwood species such as cachimbo (cariniana domestica) and to determine the characteristic values of stiffness and resistance applicable for the calculation and structural design of structural elements in buildings based on CLT. Three-layer cross-laminated panels made of cachimbo wood were produced and the corresponding sampling was carried out for mechanical resistance tests, which consisted of performing out-of-plane bending tests, perpendicular to the plane compression, parallel to the plane compression, and interlaminar shear. The manufacturing process and tests were carried out following the criteria of European and North American standards applicable to CLT. Analytical regression methods were applied to determine the correlation of variables from the results of each test and then the values of the modulus of elasticity and resistance were calculated. The results of each experimental test were compared with the values obtained in the literature in cross-laminated panels made with other species, both deciduous and broadleaf. A small variability was observed in terms of the local and global bending elasticity modules calculated in the bending test. The results of the interlaminar shear resistance indicate a negative correlation with respect to moisture content. The results of the compression resistance indicate a better performance of the panel in its direction parallel to the plane. Additionally, the results of the bending test of a sample were used to partially validate the analytical and numerical results obtained from the tests to generate a computational model in RFEM5. This study proposes characteristic values of stiffness and resistance so that designers can use them in the processes of calculation and structural design.
