Coastline variation is a process that occurs naturally around the world. It depends on climatic factors that usually follow a trend. However, natural phenomena can alter the trend and modify the coastline disproportionately. A clear example is the El Niño phenomenon, which affects the northern coast of Peru. It does not occur every year, but when it does it causes flooding and considerable damage in the north of the country as in 2017. The present study aims to analyze the variation of the coastline at the mouth of the river La Chira, department of Piura, using satellite images and performing an analysis of them using the software CoastSat. Images from 2010 to 2020 of a polygon of approximately 30 square kilometers around the mouth of the river were used. By analyzing 5 intersections in the coastline, we were able to establish trend lines for each of them and quantify their variations in length, as well as estimate the erosion or sedimentation. The results obtained indicate that sedimentation occurs in the northern area of the mouth of the Chira River, while erosion trends were observed in the southern area. Additionally, the data collected in 2017 show behaviors that deviate from the trend line, attributed to the influence of the El Niño phenomenon during that year.
