Food and energy supply is one of the most critical challenges at global level, as agriculture is a major consumer of water and energy. This study investigates the relationship between the use of water and energy in agricultural production, focusing on a drop-pressure irrigation system as a more efficient alternative to the traditional flooding system. Conduction and pumping components for a drip irrigation system on a 20 hectare citrus farm were designed and evaluated. A geomorphological characterization of the study area was carried out, along with an analysis of precipitation and demand for agricultural water using hydrological and agronomic methods. The conduction and pumping components, as well as the associated energy consumption, were carefully evaluated. The monthly available water supply was 0.07 MCM, while the demand for water was calculated using the Penman-Monteith, Blaney-Criddle and Thornthwaite methods, selecting the penman-monteith method for its consistency, which cast a value of 0.02 MCM monthly. Based on determined water requirements, 160 mm class 5 matrix pipes and 75 mm category 5 side doors were dimensioned. The pump power was calculated on the basis of the design flow, resulting in a value of 28 HP. Finally, an electric pump of 30 hp, commercially available nationally, with an estimated energy consumption of 6246.5 kWh was chosen for the proper operation of the system. This study demonstrates the viability and efficiency of drip irrigation systems in reducing water and energy consumption in agriculture.
