The accelerated and disorderly growth of the population causes an increase in the generation of solid waste. The majority of this waste is organic remains that come from household sources, agro-industrial and slaughterhouses. The poor management of these, generates negative impacts on the environment related to the decomposition of organic material. This is why organic waste must be managed correctly and prioritize the energy or material recovery. Biogas is considered the most efficient organic waste treatment technology since it takes advantage of the different byproducts that are produced during its degradation. In this way, biogas can be used to generate thermal or electrical energy, which seeks to replace conventional energy sources, coming from non-renewable resources. This work is based on determining the potential for generating biogas produced with organic waste as raw material from the Mercado N°2 supply center in Barranco. For this, a waste characterization study was carried out for a period of fourteen days and a representative sample was extracted for each day, which went through a drying process to obtain the amount of volatile solids. This data allowed us to determine the market's biogas generation potential. The result obtained was 707.40 m3 of biogas/month, which would supply 27.32% of the market's electricity consumption, generating economic, social and environmental benefits.
