In view of the traffic congestion problem faced by the city of Lima, there is a need to implement strategies to optimize vehicular traffic on the main roads of our capital city. In this sense, it is necessary to improve both the existing transportation infrastructure and the traffic control tools available. Thus, this research develops a study in an intersection of two arterial roads in the city of Lima. The present investigation is a study of arterial roads in Lima. The intersection of Avenida Universitaria and Avenida Argentina has been considered for this purpose. Both are called arterial roads because they are part of an urban road system with traffic circulation priority over other roads, according to the classification of urban roads of the Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC). Avenida Universitaria serves the districts of San Miguel, Cercado de Lima, San Martín de Porres, Los Olivos, Comas and Carabayllo. On the other hand, Avenida Argentina connects Cercado de Lima with Callao, providing service to public transportation and cargo, whose special importance lies in the fact that it is one of the main accesses to the first port of the country. This document presents a study to improve traffic at the intersection. At the end, it is evident that the implementation of an overpass at the intersection would improve indicators such as a 51% reduction in the average queue, a 6% increase in vehicle flow, a 30% reduction in vehicle density and a 44% reduction in delay times. This will make it possible to provide solutions to transportation, traffic, and roadway problems that will improve sustainable urban mobility conditions.
