The purpose of the present study was to determine the dead volume generated by sediment transport in the Sama River for the eventual construction of the Yarascay dam in the Coruca basin. The aim was to utilize empirical formulas instead of field measurements to calculate this dead volume. The study began by identifying the working area in the Coruca basin and gathering information on precipitation, average flows, and granulometry, with the support of stations such as Sama, Sambalay, Locumba, and institutions like ANA, SENAMHI, and the Special Project Tacna. Once the necessary data was collected, Arc-MAP and Hec-Ras software were employed to generate a hydraulic model of the river. Various empirical formulas, including Duboys-Straub, Einstein, Yang, Vang Rijn, Pernecker-Volimers, and Engelund-Hansed, along with the Maza formula, were utilized to estimate the dead volume to be deposited over periods of 1 and 50 years, considering a factor proposed by Vang Rijn. The obtained results were compared with studies conducted by the Special Project Tacna (PET) to determine which formula best approximated the real result. It was concluded that the formulas Duboys-Straub-Vang Rijn, Duboys-Straub-Bangnold, Pernecker and Vollmers-Vang Rijn, Pernecker and Vollmers-Bangnold, Engelund-Hansed, and Yang comply with the Van Rijn condition for the weight of sediments transported by the Sama River in tons, as well as for the dead volume over periods of 1 and 50 years in millions of cubic meters (MMC). The Pernecker-Vollmers and Vang Rijn formula yielded a dead volume of 0.448 and 22.380 MMC, respectively, which was closest to the result obtained by the Special Project Tacna, which was 0.488 and 28.2 MMC.
