Background: The identification of cases of extreme maternal morbidity (EMM) allows evaluating the quality of obstetric care in order to improve health services and reduce maternal morbidity and mortality. Objective: To evaluate the factors associated with MME in patients treated in a public hospital in Lima Norte along the period 2019 - 2022. Methodology: Retrospective case-control study in 369 patients. Patients who met at least one of the specific MME criteria were selected as cases while women who were admitted and discharged without presenting serious obstetric complications were denominated as controls. Multivariate logistic regression was used to calculate crude and adjusted ORs. Results: The associated factors were age less than 20 years (OR: 3.50; 95% CI 1.32 - 9.26), secondary educational level (OR: 3.83; 95% CI 1.45- 10.13), 0 to 5 prenatal check-ups (OR: 4.32; 95% CI 2.58 - 7. 23), an intergenic period of 19 to 59 months (OR: 2.24; 95% CI 1.08 - 4.66), an intergenic period ≥60 months (OR: 3.10; 95% CI 1.45 - 6.65), a history of previous cesarean section (OR: 2.68; 95% CI 1.45 - 4.95), and a history of previous births (OR: 0.33; 95% CI 0.16 - 0.74). Conclusions: We identified sociodemographic factors such as age and educational level, and clinical factors such as prenatal control, the interpregnancy period, history of previous birth and previous cesarean section associated with MME; and among them, a history of childbirth was identified as a protective factor.
