The objective of this investigation is to determine the tools and/or techniques used by Thaddis Laphonia ‘Kuk’ Harrell as a vocal producer in R&B songs. To do this, it delves into the history of R&B, vocal production, and the analysis of vocal performance in R&B songs chosen for this research. R&B is part of the history of the African-American community and stands out for its technical and emotional complexity of interpretation; likewise, many vocal elements of this genre are found in many other contemporary popular genres. Vocal production, on the other hand, is a specialized form of production that involves all musical production activities that include the voice, and focuses mainly on achieving the transmission of emotion and message in vocal recordings. One of the most prominent producers in the field of vocal production is Harrell. Based on the study carried out, the tools used by Harrell were classified as: based on social skills and coaching, musical and technical or sound engineering. Harrell stands out as a vocal producer for his career and also for his way of working, since he prioritizes the relationship with the artist, communication, authenticity and trust. The application of the vocal production tools used by Harrell to R&B songs could add a lot and be useful in other genres, as R&B is noted for its interpretive complexity and its vocal characteristics are featured in many other contemporary popular genres.
