Although horror films usually resort to internationally successful formulas, they can also be a vehicle for disseminating local particularities. In a multicultural country in which rationalities and mythological narratives are assembled, the purpose of the study is to analyze folklore representations in horror films, specifically, from the perspective of the audience. To do this, The Mystery of Kharisiri is taken as a case study, a feature film recorded in the department of Puno in Peru, which narrates the experiences of a myth typical of the place. As a methodological procedure, in-depth interviews are used. Thus, the diverse perceptions of the audience in the Puno region - the place where the film is set - are analyzed regarding two dimensions of folklore: myths and legends, and expressions of cultural diversity. Through sixteen interviews with young people from Puno, it is evident how they observe, identify with or question the folkloric imaginaries built around this recognized product of regional cinema. The central result of this research is that the audience consulted finds in the film The Mystery of Kharisiri not only the cinematographic recreation of a myth, but also a representation of everyday situations that, when understood from local cultural interpretations, are assumed as true facts. This reinforces not only the effect of horror films, but also the legitimization of the area's belief systems and, therefore, its cultural diversity. Therefore, this study contributes to the audiovisual field, as it allows us to contribute to debates about the representation of diversity on screen and about the complex boundaries between fiction and reality.
