The objective of this paper is to determine the relationship between the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) and the intention to purchase private health insurance in Metropolitan Lima for the target segments (NSE B and C). In order to lay the foundations for an effective sales strategy in the local market, we use a technique anchored in psychology, the TPB, which correlates beliefs with behavior. In that sense, we were able to know how it has been working overtime with the TPB in different fields of marketing and what have been the application experiences in other areas. In our case, we identified, first, an independent variable, which we call Planned Behavior, which, according to Ajzen (1996), is explained through five indicators that shape the behavioral intentions of a consumer when purchasing health insurance: insurance literacy, perceived utility, attitude towards health insurance, the subjective norm and perceived behavioral control. Secondly, we established the dependent variable, Purchase Intention, which consists of the manifest will through action to behave in a certain way (Ajzen, 1996). From this, we combine different statistical analysis techniques to contrast the hypotheses proposed. The methodology used was quantitative, based on a structured questionnaire applied to a representative sample and carefully selected to confirm how the consumer's purchase intention is related to the analysis of the chosen variables and their respective indicators within the framework of the TPB. According to the results obtained, we were able to conclude that the TPB model and each of its indicators are related to the intention to purchase private insurance. Likewise, we verify that the adaptation of the model to the reality of the consumers of Peru is feasible with some changes on the original instrument.
