There are several studies that focus on the translation of wordplay, these studies are particularly relevant when dealing with the translation of cultural references (either in a specific context or for a specific audience) or when dealing with audiovisual texts that employ various communication channels (multimodality). This research is focused on the analysis of the animated films Fantastic Mr. Fox and Zootopia. Both have a similar genre and anthropomorphic characters who create humorous dialogues containing wordplay and jokes based on animal characteristics (representation, meanings, and symbols). In the Latin American Spanish dubbing of both films, anthropomorphism is an element that influences its translation, it creates denotative and connotative meanings that must be taken into consideration when translating. Humor is also one of the characteristics that is maintained due to anthropomorphism features. However, to maintain this humor different mechanisms were used, different maxims of cooperation were violated, and, in other cases, the multimodal aspect helped to maintain it too. Animal-based jokes were analyzed to identify the interaction between wordplay and anthropomorphism in the dubbing from English to Latin American Spanish. In both films, segments presenting this type of jokes were analyzed and compared at a linguistic (linguistic mechanisms), semantic (connotative and denotative meaning) and pragmatic (Grice's maxims and resolution mechanisms) level.
