A method to protect and limit the infiltration of water from precipitation into an urban solid waste (MSW) landfill consists of the construction of cover systems, which can be formed by various materials and configurations. The selection of these materials (soils) is carried out under the study of their hydraulic and physical properties, since these will allow us to define the order of the material within the cover structure, and thus use them as a barrier against infiltration, drainage layer, support, etc. It is worth noting that, on occasion, earthen covers are more economical than those built with synthetic materials (geotextiles, geocomposites, and geomembranes). In this sense, this thesis aims to provide alternatives for MSW covers using only natural soils. To this end, in the first place, we will carry out the study of the “Guide for the design of covers for MSW” of the Ministry of the Environment (MINAM) and the “Guide for the design of covers for mining deposits” of the Ministry of Energy and Mines (MINEM), in order to identify the most relevant parameters for the design of covers. In the second place, we will study the conditions and phenomena that occur inside MSW landfills, as well as the hydraulic and physical properties of the soils to be used in the closure layers. In the third place, we will propose three covers, to which we will carry out the infiltration analysis through numerical modeling with GeoStudio 2014 - Vadose/W. software, varying some material properties, to finally test a physical model of the most optimal proposal and be able to compare results.
