Objectives: To determine the association between macronutrient distribution and socioeconomic status in people aged 15 to 65 years. Methods: Secondary analysis of the cross-sectional ELANS study. 9,218 persons were randomly selected from the most populated urban areas within 8 Latin American countries. The association between macronutrient intake distribution (24-hour recall of two non-consecutive days) and socioeconomic level (high, medium and low) was assessed by crude and adjusted linear regression. Results: At the global level, there was a positive association between socioeconomic status and protein energy intake (High: 16,2%; IC: 16,1%-16,4%; vs Medium:16,0%; IC: 15,9%-16,1% and Low: 15,9%; IC: 15,8%-16,0%), fat energy (High: 30,3%; IC: 30,0%-30,6%; Medium: 29,8%; IC: 29,6%-30,0% and Low: 29,2%; IC: 29,0%-29,4%) and proportion of animal protein (High: 66,0%; IC: 65,4%-66,5%; Medium: 64,9%; IC: 64,6%-65,1% and Low: 63,8%; IC: 63,5%-64,1%); in contrast, there was no positive association with carbohydrate energy, but a negative association was found within most of the countries (p <0.05). Conclusions: Socioeconomic status influences the proportion of macronutrient energy as well as the proportion of animal protein.
