Mine tailings are stored in various ways, adapting to their mechanical and chemical characteristics, as well as the relief, environmental conditions and socioeconomic environment. However, the fundamental objective of any tailing’s facility is to ensure safe, stable and profitable storage, while minimizing as much as possible negative impacts on health and the environment, both during its useful life and in the period afterwards at its closing. Therefore, if the expansion of the tailings dam was not carried out, the risk of saturation and, as a result, the possibility of overflow would be faced. In response to this concern, the second phase of the expansion of the tailings dam with the downstream method in a mine in northern Peru was proposed, with the purpose of increasing its storage capacity, which would thus represent a valuable contribution. to the preservation of the environment and security. The main challenge we face in our professional sufficiency work is the limitation in the storage capacity of the first tailings dam. Therefore, a detailed study was carried out that considered various factors that can influence the design and calculations, such as climatology, hydrology and lithology, with the aim of increasing the storage capacity of the second tailings dam and guarantee its safety, minimizing risks of collapse or leakage. It also sought to preserve the surrounding environment and ensure the long-term sustainability of operations, avoiding negative environmental impacts and supporting the social responsibility of the local community. At the conclusion of the study, the second tailings dam was expanded, increasing its capacity to 258,835.46 m³. This expansion will allow the mine's requirements and activities to be met for a period of 12 months. The dam reaches a height of 15 meters, reaching a level of 4,200 meters above sea level, with a crown length of 115 meters and a free edge of 2.0 meters. This significant improvement in storage capacity and safety conditions not only constitutes a fundamental achievement for the preservation of the environment and the local community, but also ensures the continuity of mining operations in a sustainable and responsible manner.
