This paper describes the implementation of an improvement proposal in a metal-mechanic company dedicated to the development, assembly and maintenance of mechanical projects with operations center in Lima-Peru. The analysis focuses on the problem of low productivity in the manufacture of spools due to inadequate distribution, long distances traveled between stations and congestion of work routes. This leads to failure to meet project deadlines. To better physically distribute the factors of production and identify the activities that do not add value to the production process, the plant layout engineering tool was used. The improvement proposal includes the following stages: First, the terms necessary to understand the project are defined, the current state of the company is described, the problem is identified and the root causes are analyzed. Next, the plant redistribution is applied for a better physical arrangement, a scenario simulation is executed and a financial analysis is made to determine if the investment is feasible. Finally, conclusions and recommendations are formulated. The results obtained demonstrate the main advantages of using the plant layout engineering tool, which are shorter production delays and higher productivity.
