Background: The discontinuity of the use of contraceptive methods can have many causes, one of them can be the socioeconomic level. The objective of our study was to evaluate whether there is a relationship between socioeconomic status and the discontinuity of contraceptive methods in university students. Methods: An online questionnaire was used. The dependent variable was contraceptive discontinuity and was measured with the following question: Have you abandoned, discontinued or interrupted the use of your main contraceptive method? The independent variable is the socioeconomic level, to evaluate and categorize it, the “Financial Capabilities Measurement Survey in the Andean Countries” was used. For the analysis of the variables, statistical tests were used: chi square, t-student, prevalence ratios. Results: We surveyed 382 participants. The average age was 21.7 years. It was observed that 54.2% of the students discontinued the use of their main contraceptive method. In reference to the socioeconomic level, most of the population belongs to sector B1 (32.7%) followed by A2 (31.7%). Socioeconomic status had a statistically significant relationship at level B with contraceptive discontinuity. RPa of level B: 1.22, CI: 95% (1.00-1.48) compared to level A. The main reason for contraceptive discontinuity most commonly reported was due to the collateral effects that these caused in the respondents. Conclusions: More than half of the students discontinued their main contraceptive method, and it was concluded that the socioeconomic level is related to discontinuity, this was greater in students of socioeconomic level B. Future studies should investigate the specific reasons for each specific method for each socioeconomic level.
