In 2017, the climatic phenomenon called: “El niño“, and in 2023, the “Yacu“ phenomenon, resulted in a strongly rainfall, leading to extreme hyperconcentrated flow events in the streams and rivers of the Lurigancho - Chosica region. As a response, one proposal was emerged to construct retention dams with the aim of preventing loss of human lives and economic damage. Morphometric parameters of the watershed were determined using satellite imagery with a 12.5-meter resolution and the ArcMap software. The hydrological model employed HEC-HMS version 4.11 to calculate maximum liquid discharge for return periods of 2, 10, 20, 50, 100, and 200 years. For the hydraulic model, the numerical model Flo-2D Pro was used. Input data included a 1-meter resolution Digital Elevation Model (DEM) generated from a drone flight, liquid hydrographs, volumetric concentration, channel and floodplain roughness, as well as coefficients α1 and β1 for dynamic viscosity (η) and yield stress (τy). Calibration was based on the 2023 event, adjusting measurements taken in the field. The coefficient of velocity (CV) was adjusted to a maximum value of 0.45. Output data included information about flow velocities, water levels, discharge rates, and maximum impact forces. Recently, proposals for retention dams have been developed with a 30-meter channel width, and the freeboard was increased by 20% to account for flow depth. Pre-dimensions for dam components, such as crown width, base, footing height, and spillway height, were calculated. Adjustments were made to ensure a factor of safety for overturning and sliding, with values greater than 1.5, based on the impact force from the debris flow.
