The present research develops the hydraulic design criteria for rectangular and trapezoidal irrigation channels and how their dimensions vary based on maximum hydraulic efficiency. This work includes an introduction to the irrigation channel environment, associated issues, the objectives pursued, and the actual research development. For this study, the Chucupe irrigation canal project located in the Chiclayo province, Lambayeque department, was selected. The chosen section of the project spans from kilometer 0+000 to kilometer 1+095 and has a trapezoidal cross-section lined with concrete. This canal was assessed based on hydraulic criteria such as velocity, freeboard, Froude number, bottom width, and slope; criteria that influence maximum hydraulic efficiency (MHE). Ten slope values were analyzed for both trapezoidal (existing) and rectangular (proposed) sections, with values ranging from 0.10 ‰ to 30 ‰. The results of the mentioned hydraulic criteria were obtained using the H-Canals program. Applying the MHE criterion to the 10 proposed slopes, the trapezoidal section of a canal is hydraulically more efficient than a rectangular section. The results indicated that six proposed changes in slope of the trapezoidal channel are feasible for a redesign of the original channel. On the other hand, no alternative slope change in a rectangular channel meets the hydraulic criteria proposed in this work.
