The present research aims to analyze the crowding-out or crowding-in effect of public investment on private consumption in Peru for the period 1995-2019. Data were taken from the statistical portal of the Central Reserve Bank of Peru, where the variables: Gross Domestic Product, Average Active Interest Rate, Private Consumption, Public Debt, Public Investment, and Exports were analyzed. The theoretical framework is based on the Bernanke-Blinder model, where the interest rate serves as the transmission channel for the effects of public investment on private consumption. The chosen macroeconometric model for the analysis is the Vector Autoregressive model, where logarithms of the series were taken to display growth rates. The results show that public investment does not have significant effects on crowding out or crowding in private consumption, and that GDP behaves similarly to private consumption. Thus, this research demonstrates the need to expand the analysis of these macroeconomic variables and their effects.
