The objective of the present study was to determine the relation between feelings of loneliness and coping strategies, as well as to identify differences in these variables according to the sex of students at a private university in Lima Metropolitana. An associative-correlational study was conducted, in which 147 men (22.4%) and women students (77.6%) between 18 and 29 years old (M= 21.2, SD = 2.63) participated for convenience. The De Jong-Gierveld Loneliness Scale and the Coping Appraisal Inventory by Carver were used to measure the variables. Through a correlation analysis, it was found that emotional loneliness maintains a large negative relation with seeking social support for instrumental reasons (r =-.53, p < .001) and seeking social support for emotional reasons (r = -.59, p < .001). As for social loneliness, there was a negative, moderate and significant correlation with the strategy of positive reinterpretation and growth (r = -.33, p < .001). Gender differences were also found in the strategies of focusing on and venting of emotions, where women scored higher than men, but not in the strategies of positive reinterpretation and growth and planning. In conclusion, the results of this research emphasize the necessity to design interventions aimed at the university population to alleviate the feeling of loneliness. In this manner, the results provide specific strategies for the implementation of future interventions, in order to achieve greater effectiveness in their approach.
