The objective of the study was to describe the process of transition to motherhood in a sample of low-income first-time mothers in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. For this reason, a qualitative study with a phenomenological design was developed in eight first-time mothers aged between 19 and 29 years, applying the semi-structured interview technique. The main results indicate that the mother experiences various contradictory emotions from the moment she finds out about her pregnancy. In this way, it is considered extremely important that mothers can receive support from their environment to make the process more bearable considering the context in which they find themselves. Likewise, it was found that the woman generates expectations regarding her baby and motherhood, which can be fulfilled or destroyed. In addition, mothers can identify with her mother figure and decide to take the same role or change it depending on the type of relationship they have had. Finally, it was found that women change their goals at the beginning of maternity, where they prioritize only their babies. It is concluded that low-income first-time mothers experienced a period of significant change since the news of their pregnancy, which was made more complex by the COVID-19 pandemic, since they had to worry about not getting infected, lack of work, poor hospital services and not being able to access their monthly check-ups properly.
