OBJECTIVE: The main objective of this study was to determine the association between tobacco use and problem gambling in the general urban population. The secondary objectives, to measure the prevalence of tobacco use and problem gambling and compare both. METHODS & MATERIALS: A secondary analysis was made, using the database from a cross-sectional study in Peruvian urban population from 2017. This included residents from urban zones in 13 different provinces of Peru, with a sample of n = 7417. The outcomes used were the lifetime prevalence of gambling and of problem gambling. The input variable was tobacco use. Poisson regression with robust variance was used to calculate the crude and adjusted prevalence ratio with a confidence interval of 95%. RESULTS: An association between tobacco use and lifetime prevalence of gambling (PR 1.5; CI 95% 1.2:1.8; p <0.001) was found, but not with problem gambling (PR 0.8; CI 95% 0.6:1.1; p >0.05). In relation to problem gambling; there was a significant association with the male sex, the presence of friends who consume drugs, residents of the coast region (excluding Lima) and the rainforest region, and marihuana use. CONCLUSIONS: An association between tobacco use and our first outcome was found; nevertheless, there is a discrepancy in the lack of association between problem gambling and tobacco use. This could be due to the fact that other studies have used different populations. We recommend others to realize a longitudinal study on a population in risk of suffering from pathological gambling. This will help establish the associated factors with more clarity.
