The purpose of this research document is to explain the process of how the afro Cuban conga’s set was incorporated and developed in the rhythm comping of the afro Peruvian music through the lens and trajectory of the musical group “Peru Negro”. The subject has been divided into three chapters. The first chapter sets a historical framework around the first music manifestations brought to Peru by African slaves, an assessment of the main cultural groups considering the afro Peruvian culture resurgence and an extensive explanation of the main instruments in the rhythm comping played by the musical group Peru Negro. The second chapter is based mainly on Peru Negro, where the main comping grooves played on the conga set where created and established by the Cuban percussionist Guillermo “El Niño” Regueira. Additionally, this chapter explores the main interpreters of the conga set in the current afro Peruvian music scene. The third chapter contains a deep exploration of the conga set comping grooves in the main festejo dances, as well as in the current festejo structure (verse, chorus, and fugue). These comping rhythms will be transcribed, analyzed, and compared to the traditional strokes played by the cajon. This chapter also provides a thorough explanation of the incorporation of conga sets in the rhythm orchestration of festejo and describes how this instrument became a staple in every afro Peruvian music ensemble.
