Aim: To evaluate the association between household food insecurity and overweight and obesity in adolescents aged 13 to 16 who participated in the Young Lives Study in Peru, 2016. Material and methods: Secondary cross-sectional study of the fifth round of the Peruvian minor cohort of the Young Lives Longitudinal study. The dependent variable was nutritional status, assessed through the BMI/age z-core (not overweight/obese: <1.00 SD; overweight/obese: >1.00 SD) and the exposure variable was household food insecurity measured through the Component Access to Household Food Insecurity Scale (HFIAS). Crude and adjusted PR were calculated through a Poisson regression to evaluate the association between household food insecurity and overweight and obesity with a confidence level of 95%. Results: Of the 1,324 participants included in the study, 77.9% had some degree of household food insecurity. No association was found between household food security and overweight/obesity (25.6%, 26.3% and 22.9% of households with food security, mild insecurity, and moderate/severe insecurity were overweight/obese; p=0.430). Conclusions: No association was found between household food insecurity and overweight and obesity in adolescents. It is worth mentioning that almost four out of every five adolescents had households with food insecurity. It is recommended to evaluate other components of food security in future research and assess their long-term effects on nutritional status.
