BACKGROUND: There are few studies about the association between household food expenditure and overweight/obesity in children and adolescents in undeveloped countries. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether there is an association between household food expenditure and overweight/obesity among children from Perú from Young Lives younger cohort (round 5) study. METHODS: Cross-sectional-analytical research of secondary database. RESULTS: Considering total household food expenditure (high vs. low expenditure) initial crude analyzes showed an association between the variables of interest that persisted after the adjusted analyses by sex and child education (Model 1: PRa=1.29; 95% CI: 1.08 to 1.55; p=0.006). Similar findings were found when food group was considered such as “fruits“, “dairy and dairy products“, “spending on others“, and “fast food“. Moreover, the association was much stronger for “fish, meats and eggs“, considering both medium vs. low expenditure (Model 1: PRa=1.54; 95% CI: 1.19 to 2.00; p=0.001 and Model 2: PRa=1.36; 95% CI: 1.07 a 1.72; p=0.012) and high vs. low expenditure (Model 1: PRa=1.74; 95% CI: 1.38 to 2.19; p<0.001 and Model 2: PRa=1.35; 95% CI: 1.09 to 1.68; p=0.006). CONCLUSIONS: The analysis results suggest that there is an association between household food expenditure (both total and differentiated by food group) with overweight/obesity in adolescents round 5 in the smallest cohort of the Young Lives study in Peru
