In an audiovisual landscape where queer representation is gaining increasing prominence, and filmmakers are actively seeking novel approaches to portray these experiences in fictional narratives, the current study endeavors to examine the perceptions of both queer and non-queer audiences in Lima, Peru, pertaining to the trans representation of Marina in the acclaimed Chilean film “A Fantastic Woman“ (2018). Specifically, the investigation focuses on assessing the dimensions of realism, inclusion, and acceptance in the physical, psychological, and social realms. Employing a methodology that combines group discussions with elements of a film forum, this research sheds light on the divergent perspectives observed between queer and non-queer audiences. The findings underscore the ongoing discourse surrounding the criteria that define a positive trans representation, highlighting the significance of comprehensive trans involvement throughout all stages of queer filmmaking production.
