When unexpected, negative or important events happen to human beings, they tend to look for the cause that has generated these events and make a series of attributions to explain them. The same thing happens in the educational environment, teachers and students look for the causes that explain academic performance. The objective of this work is to identify the causal attributions of students and teachers of the Medicine course of a private university in Lima about success and failure in the subject Structure and Function and in the Systems courses that follow it. Data were obtained through semi-structured interviews with six students and four teachers. It was found that for both groups of interviewees an inadequate study methodology and the difference in design between Structure and Function and the Systems courses were considered as causal attributions of failure. On the other hand, both teachers and students considered the attributional factor effort as a causal factor for success, as well as motivation. Both should be higher in the Systems courses, due to the higher level of demand and complexity perceived, in relation to Structure and Function, which was described as an easy course. We also found in the teachers a loss of motivation when teaching Structure and Function due to the simplicity of the topics to be taught and in the Systems courses due to the perceived poor preparation and lack of interest of the students.
