The origin of hostels dates back to the early 19th century in Germany and is attributed to Professor Richard Schirrmann, who came up with the idea during his school trips when he could not find an inexpensive place to stay. The objective of this research was to analyze the development of the hostel industry worldwide, since it has been growing steadily, due to the interest of young people to travel and have new experiences. The hostel information is scattered, so this study synthesizes the available information for all interested parties. The methodology used was a literature review with an integrative approach since different points of view were integrated to have a broader vision of the topic. Among the main findings, it was found that the hostel concept is changing, as there are new traveler profiles such as millennials, backpackers, and flashpackers who are more demanding when looking for accommodation. Hostels are adapting to these recent changes, as they are now more than just economic lodging, as they offer complementary or social services that meet the preferences of the demand. Likewise, recent trends are emerging in hostels that make them more innovative and attractive to travelers.
