Currently, adobe continues to be one of the predominant materials used in Peruvian housing construction. The use of this material and its economic benefits make it an optimal alternative in limited areas, because of this, its use is more common in high Andean zones. However, despite having properties such as manageability, adobe is characterized by low resistance to prolonged exposure to climatic phenomena such as rain and floods. The purpose of this research is to improve the water resistance of adobe blocks by designing a mixture incorporating the use of cattail fibers and lime binder. As validation, the requirements dictated in the E.080 standard for adobe houses were taken, by performing compressive strength, flexo-tensile and compression tests in piles in order to verify the design; in addition, absorption, capillarity and pressure resistance tests were incorporated by means of the water jet test, to evaluate the behavior of the blocks when exposed to water for a certain period of time. As a result, it was found that the mix designs with 1.5% cattail and 5% and 10% lime increased the adobe's water resistance capacity when compared to a traditional mix by up to 40%. In turn, comparing the proposed mix designs from mechanical and economic points of view, it was determined that the adobe design with 5% lime represented the most optimal and applicable alternative in the study area.
