Introduction: Depression is a mental disorder that can affect adults and adolescents. There are several associated factors and one of them is inadequate academic performance. Because of this, we estimated the association between inadequate academic performance and the presence of depressive symptoms in the adolescent population of a national college during the state of emergency due to the COVID-19 pandemic in the year 2021. Methods: The study has a cross-sectional - analytical - observational design. Students in the 3rd, 4th and 5th years of high school were included. Data were obtained through a virtual survey composed of the DASS-21 questionnaire. All the data were processed using Microsoft Excel 2022 and the statistical analysis was performed in STATA 14.0. Results: The 53.54% of the population was female, the average age was 14.96%, 61% of the students presented depressive symptoms and 34.14% of the students had inadequate academic performance. In the bivariate analysis, the variables sex, age, living with both parents and family member with COVID-19 in the last months showed an association. Finally, the regression model showed a 9 % higher prevalence of depressive symptoms if there was inadequate academic performance (PR:1.09 CI 1.05 - 1.1). Conclusion: Students in the third, fourth and fifth years of high school in a public school in northern Lima presented a high prevalence of depressive symptoms, which increased when the student had inadequate academic performance.
