This research addresses the contribution to environmental issues from the construction point of view, seeking to reduce the concentration of one of the toxic gases that can be found in a polluted environment such as Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2) by optimizing the common Portland cement-based mortar by means of photocatalysis using Titanium Dioxide (TiO2) as a catalyst. The main objective of the research is to propose the use of TiO2 in mortars directly exposed to a UV light source and contributing to air purification by means of photocatalysis. Although photocatalysis has been the subject of research for some years, it is very scarce in our country. For this purpose, an experimental research methodology was adopted, analyzing qualitatively and quantitatively the results obtained. The mechanical properties of compressive strength, flowability, absorption containing 0%, 5%, 7.5% and 10% TiO2 were evaluated concluding that in specimens where the addition of titanium dioxide is greater than 5% properties of compression, flowability and absorption, for the air purification test 6 samples of each mortar design were taken and under the standards of UNI 11259:2016 the functionality of titanium dioxide photocatalytic mortars with respect to air purification was determined.
