Objectives: To evaluate the frequency of Fasciola hepatica and determine its association with nutritional status, along with associated factors, in school-aged children in the region of San Pablo (Cajamarca, Peru). Methods: This is an analytical and cross-sectional study, conducted during the period of April and June 2015 in an educational institution located in the town of San Pablo, Cajamarca - Peru. The population studied were children aged 4 to 14 years, the sample size was 140 individuals selected by convenience. Stool samples were taken for processing of Fasciola hepatica coproantigens by ELISA, as well as anthropometric nutritional assessment (weight, height, abdominal perimeter) and a validated survey was applied to collect clinical symptoms and associated factors. The data were analyzed with the STATA v15.00 program. Chi2 and Fisher tests were used, taking a p < 0.05 as significant. Results: Of the 140 children analyzed, the male and female population was 50% (70/140) in both cases. Of the total population, 15% (21/140) were positive cases for Fasciola hepatica. Undernutrition was found in 75% (107/140) of the studied population. Undernutrition was found in 81% (17/21) of those infected by F. hepatica; however, when analyzing its association, no statistically significant value was obtained. The most common symptoms were abdominal pain in the last 3 months with 71.4% (15/21) (p = 0.612) and weight loss with 52.4% (11/21) (p = 0.868). Factors associated with Fasciola hepatica infection with statistically significant value were emollient consumption (p = 0.09), chewing grass (p = 0.046), weekly egg consumption (p < 0.001) and the practice of defecating in the field (p = 0.043). Conclusions: We found a high prevalence of F. hepatica in school-aged children in the community of San Pablo, Cajamarca, Peru. Although the study determined that there is no association with the nutritional status of these children, there are other factors that influence the risk of F. hepatica infection. This shows the importance of strengthening preventive measures in this region, with greater emphasis on water sanitation and proper hygiene habits.
