Introduction: In the midst of pandemic context by COVID-19, health literacy could be a tool to decreased the psychological impact of fear that it has caused. Objective: To determine the association between health literacy and fear of COVID-19 in students of Health Sciences and Psychology faculties of a private university in the city of Lima, Peru. Materials and methods: An analytical cross-sectional study was conducted, since February to May 2021, in 243 students from Health Sciences and Psychology faculties of a Peruvian university from the first to the fourth year. The information about sociodemographic variables, health literacy and fear of COVID-19 was collected through an online survey. Fear of COVID-19 was measured by the FCV-19S questionnaire and Health literacy by the HLS-EU-Q16, which were validated in the Peruvian environment. Results: It was found that a lower level of health literacy, was related to a higher degree of fear of COVID-19, which was statistically significant (RP = 1.38; 95% CI: 1.1 to 1.8; p = 0.019). 48% of students expressed high fear of COVID-19 and 77% presented a sufficient level of health literacy. Conclusions: There is an association between the level of health literacy in students of health sciences and psychology with the degree of fear of COVID-19. These results will allow the creation of educational interventions and policies that improve the level of literacy to reduce the level of fear of COVID-19 in the peruvian population.
