Suicide is currently the second leading cause of death worldwide among young people aged 15-29 years. Suicidal ideation has been pointed out in the literature as a predictive factor for reaching completed suicide. However, there is no specific protective factor against it. Studies have been described in the literature in which a relationship between physical activity and reduced suicidal ideation is found; but there are also found contradictory studies. Objective: To evidence whether physical activity is a protective factor against the development of suicidal ideation in middle school students in the state of Florida. Methodology: Secondary analysis of data from the Middle School Health Behavior Survey, conducted in 3934 students between 6th and 8th grade. For methods of this study were measured by considering questions related to suicidal thinking, suicidal planning, and suicidal attempt; physical activity was measured by asking the number of days per week in which they performed at least 60 minutes of exercise. Results: The mean age was 12.72 (SD 1.02) and the predominant sex was female (51.50%), 21.71% of students reported suicidal thinking. In addition, abulia was reported by 29.23% and non-suicidal self-harm by 14.13%. In the bivariate analysis, a statistically significant association was found with most of the variables and the 3 components of suicidal ideation. The analyses found that abulia increased the probability of suicidal thinking (RPa: 3.6), suicidal plan (RPa: 3.62) and suicidal attempt (RPa: 3.64), in the same way it was found that non-suicidal self-harm increased the probability of suicidal thinking (RPa: 2.34), suicidal plan (RPa: 2.68) and suicidal attempt (RPa: 4.74). Conclusions: No association was found between physical activity and suicidal ideation.
