Introduction: The appearance of Covid-19 in Peruvian territory and its rapid spread, put the country's health system on high alert so it became necessary for a timely and thorough evaluation of patients to explore indicators that could contribute to the finding of factors that could predict the severe development of the viral infection. Methods: A descriptive and retrospective cohort study was carried out, using data from 266 medical records corresponding to patients admitted to the Hospital Nacional Ramiro Prialé Prialé of the Red asistencial de Junín- ESSALUD, with a confirmed diagnosis of Covid-19, obtained after authorization from the Hospital authorities, to relate serum glucose values and the occurrence of Covid-19 critical illness. Results: The median blood glucose values obtained from critically ill patients compared to non-critically ill Covid-19 patients were significantly higher (P<0.001). In patients with at least one form of Covid-19 critical illness, a significantly higher incidence of hyperglycemia was found compared to those patients who did not present any of the criticality criteria (P<0.001). Patients with hyperglycemia were found to have a 56% higher risk of suffering one of the forms of critical illness (RR 1.56; CI 1.39 to 1.76). Conclusions: The hyperglycemia status of a patient infected with Sars-Cov-2, could be used as a predictor for the development of critical Covid-19 (according to WHO standards) so it is suggested, to perform serum glycemia analysis in patients to anticipate unfavorable critical forms, and offer timely care to patients who require it.
