OBJCTIVE: To determine the association between sleep quality and the Internet addiction in university students from the first to sixth year of medicine career during COVID-19 pandemic. METHOD: An Analytical cross-sectional study was carried out. There were 405 medical students from the first to the sixth year participated. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Scale (PSQI), which classifies participants into those with good or poor sleep quality, was used. Internet addiction was measured using Young's Internet Addiction Test (IAT) with the categories of average internet use, problematic internet use and addictive internet use. Chi2 test and a Poisson regression model were used to assess the association between the two. RESULTS: 69.4% of participants had poor sleep quality and 46.5% had problematic/addictive use of the Internet. Bivariate analysis showed an association between both (p<0,001). Poisson regression model showed association between poor sleep quality and problematic/addictive internet use [PR (IC95%): 0,93 (0,89-0,97) (p=0,002)], as well as with academic year [PR (IC95%): 1,27 (1,14-1,42) (p<0,001)]. CONCLUSIONS: Poor sleep quality was associated with problematic/addictive internet use in medical students. It is important to implement measures to promote sleep hygiene and moderate internet use in future health professionals.
