Enrollment levels have improved over the last five years; however, this does not guarantee quality education. On the other hand, school dropout levels have increased in several Peruvian departments, since the incentives for people to study have been reduced. Likewise, educational policies are aimed at increasing the average performance of students, as well as reducing the associated social gaps in recent years. Therefore, this paper evaluates the effects of the relative number of schools with respect to the population of study age 13 to 19 years in secondary education on enrollment levels, school attendance and academic achievement. The results indicate that in all three cases there is a positive and statistically significant association at conventional levels with the dependent variables; that is, the construction of one additional school per 1000 children aged 13 to 19 years increases the probability that they will enroll, attend and improve their academic performance. The relative increase in the number of schools contributes to a reduction in the transaction costs involved in students' travel from their homes to their school.
