Shigella spp. It is a gram-negative bacillus of the Enterobacteriaceae family, which is transmitted between humans by the fecal-oral route due to insufficient sanitation and hygiene, poverty and contaminated food. Shigella spp. It produces around 164 million infected, of which 163 million would occur in underdeveloped countries. In the United States, the incidence of shigellosis was 3.8 cases per 100,000 population and predominantly affects children. Clinical symptoms range from asymptomatic infection or gastroenteritis to severe dysentery. The objective of the present study is to evaluate the prevalence of Shigella spp. and to determine the associated factors in school-age children from an urban and rural community in the department of Cajamarca in Peru. The research is cross-sectional, descriptive with non-probabilistic convenience sampling. The study was conducted in children aged 4 to 14 who attended the Andrés Avelino Cáceres school (Baños del Inca) and the San José de Las Vizcachas school (San Pablo). For the detection of Shigella spp. real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was used. The prevalence of Shigella spp. in the rural community it is 9.1% and in the urban community it is 3.6%. The associated factor found in San Pablo was the consumption of salads (p=0.24) and in Baños del Inca, it was hand washing before eating (p=0.008). This study found a higher prevalence of Shigella spp. in a rural community, so we suggest implementing interventions to prevent infection from this bacterium and other parasites.
