Introduction: People who were victims of physical child abuse have lower tolerance for stressors and are therefore more susceptible to psychiatric illnesses, including depression. There are few longitudinal studies in the region that analyze this relationship. Objectives: To asses the association between history physical child abuse and the probability of suffering depressive symptoms during the COVID-19 pandemic in th young people from the younger cohort of the longitudinal study “Young Lives” in Peru. Methods: A secondary analysis of the younger cohort of the longitudinal study “Young Lives” in Peru was carried out. The response variable was the presence of depressive symptoms, which was evaluated using the PHQ-8 questionnaire, with a cut-off point of ≥ 5 points evaluated at 18-19 years. The exposure variable was the history of physical child abuse evaluated through the self-report of the confidential questionnaire evaluated at 14-15 years. For the multivariate analysis, the Poisson regression model with log link with robust variance was used, where PR and 95% CI were calculated. Results: The prevalence of people with physical child abuse in the study population was 30.2%, while the prevalence of depressive symptoms was 32.3%. Those who reported physical child abuse had a 40% higher prevalence of depressive symptoms compared to those who did not (p = 0.003). An association was found between the presence of depressive symptoms with age, female sex, belonging to the wealth quintile 5, having a history of alcohol consumption up to 15 years of age. Conclusions: There is an association between a history of physical child abuse and the presence of depressive symptoms in the population studied. The prevalence for both was 30.2% and 32.3%, respectively. More longitudinal studies are required in our population.
