The purpose of the study was to explore the family functioning and grieving experienced by families (parents and sons) after the loss of a child or sibling by suicide. For this reason, a qualitative study with a phenomenological design was performed. On this study participated three families who attend a self-help group and who had experienced the loss of a child or sibling by suicide around 3 years ago. The semi-structured interview was used as the data collection technique and data analysis was performed through thematic analysis. The results show that there are changes in family functioning due to the forms of adaptation to the event of the death of the family member and decreased emotional unity of the members of the family. Regarding grieving, a questioning of the reason for the suicide was found, as well as the concern of having failed as a sibling or parent. As a conclusion, it can be affirmed that family functioning is affected by the grief experienced by family members in the loss of a son or sibling by suicide.
