Even though Peru is a highly seismic country due to its geographic location in the Pacific ring of fire, a significant amount of adobe homes in the country are built without earthquake resistance standards that ensure a minimum level of safety against mild or severe earthquakes. For this reason, for decades, institutions such as the Universidad Nacional de Ingeniería (UNI) or the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú (PUCP) have carried out several investigations about adobe reinforcement techniques using materials such as halyards ropes, reeds, wood, etc. The main objective of this thesis is to propose a type of reinforcement for adobe walls with the use of electro-welded wire meshes and to validate the results of this proposal experimentally through laboratory tests. This type of reinforcement is aimed at walls built with particularly slender adobe bricks, which are used in houses located in the settlement of Huarangal, district of Carabayllo. An experimental test program divided into two phases was carried out. In the first phase, axial compression tests were carried out in three adobe prisms and diagonal compression in three adobe wallets without reinforcement. In the second phase, 12 reinforced adobe wallets with two types of electro-welded wire mesh were tested on different sides of the specimens. Tests results showed an increase in shear strength and ductility of reinforced adobe wallets due to mesh type and the number of reinforced sides in each wallet. Finally, it was proved that adobe walls of the analyzed house located in Huarangal needs to be reinforced for improving its shear capacity.
