In order to achieving financial self-sustainability, microfinance institutions seek to provide social support to entrepreneurs who are unable to obtain financing from large institutions, which is why they apply fair interest rates. For this reason, interest rates are of vital importance for these entities. Interest rates have several determining variables, including internal and external ones. This paper analyzes the components that are part of the operating costs and the influence that this factor has on the definition of the lending rate. To achieve this, it is organized in four main sections. In the first chapter, the theoretical framework on which microcredits are developed is presented, as well as their effects and the interest rate on the microfinance institution and on the population. The second chapter analyzes comparatively the variables and factors in microfinance, as well as the types of microfinance and microcredit institutions. The third chapter compares how the interest rate in microcredit is set and how it varies in relation to its determinants. The last chapter explores the impact of operating costs on lending rate setting. The main conclusion reached in this paper is that the operating cost of MFIs is a variable in setting interest rates, although some authors find that the new digital platforms make it possible to adjust it and thus greatly reduce it to benefit low-income clients, their main target audience.
