Previous studies of Oscar Wilde’s work have had a deeper focus on analyzing the author’s style and, although some have analyzed romanticism and dadaism, aestheticism has yet to be explored thoroughly. Therefore, this investigation aims to analyze the translation of the representations of aestheticism in The Picture of Dorian Gray, both in the original text in English and in two Spanish translations by Ricardo Baeza and Victoria Leon. This novel was very controversial even before it was published in 1890 by Lippincott’s Monthly Magazine, which is why the editor decided to delete and modify the passages that reflected an aesthetic atmosphere. However, after it was published, the story caused uproar among Victorian society and, consequently, a more thorough edition was made for its publication as a novel in 1891. In this study, the concepts of romanticism, aestheticism, and decadence will be considered to understand the movement that will be analyzed, as well as concepts of Victorian era and censorship to understand the context in which the novel was published, and concepts of micro-elements to identify the representations of aestheticism in the novel. In this investigation the techniques of content analysis and textual contrastive analysis will be used as part of the methodological design to meet the objectives of the investigation.
